Special Education services are provided for senior high students who are determined to have a disability in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) that adversely affects their educational performance and requires special education and related services. Special education services are determined by the student’s individualized education program (IEP) and are provided in the least restrictive environment with a focus on access to the general curriculum and outcomes after graduation. See your current Special Ed. Resource Teacher for enrollment options. Approval from the IEP teacher must be given for these courses.
TRANSLATIONAL ENGLISH 9 - 12: FUNCTIONAL READING AND READ 180Length: YearAvailable for: 9 - 12 English classes are designed to meet identified written language, communication, and reading deficits. Courses address communication skills, written expression, and developmental reading skills. Students’ awareness of literature and expository writing is expanded. Students practice discussion and critical thinking skills by reading a variety of genre. Written communication is expanded by building on writing skills in vocational and life skills situations.
MATH DECISION MAKING FOR LIFE AND CONCEPTS OF PERSONAL FINANCE Length: YearAvailable for: 11 & 12 Math classes are designed to meet students’ identified math calculation and application deficits. Courses address essential skills in computation and problem solving. Mathematical skills will be strengthened, and students will develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and making meaningful connections in life. Students practice consumer math skills and utilize calculators to apply mathematical problem-solving skills to real life situations.

DIRECTED STUDIES Length: YearAvailable for:9 -12 Students learn to become independent learners by applying study skills and learning strategies in order to be successful in content classes. Support to students in completing assignments, preparing for tests given in regular education classes, and developing effective study habits is emphasized.
TRANSITION Length: Meetings throughout the yearAvailable for:9 - 12 Students investigate a wide variety of career options and participate in school and community pre-vocational activities. Students select areas of career interests and examine career choices through a variety of media and activities. An emphasis is placed on independent living, job seeking and job keeping skills. Students practice completing application forms, writing business letters, reading directions, communicating in a professional manner, and responding to job interviews with confidence.
JONES CENTER & WORK EXPERIENCE Length: YearAvailable for:12 The Hilda B. Jones Center is a job development-training center. We offer a variety of work experience as well as tailor-fit programs. Students attending the Jones Center must come from Granite School District high school programs. Students are admitted only upon referral from the designated teacher or COPE center director. Some students are trained on campus while others are integrated into job sites in the community.
ESL
English as a Second Language (ESL) services are provided for senior high students who are determined to have learned a language prior to learning English.
ESL ENGLISH 9, 10, 11, & 12Length: YearAvailable for: 9 - 12 This class is a combined skills course integrating acquisition of and improving on all four skill areas of English: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will practice new vocabulary in writing and speaking.

CE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT - ESL 1010Length: YearAvailable for: 11 This course develops academic listening and speaking skills of advanced level students who are interested in pursuing an academic degree at Salt Lake Community College. Learners work on academic vocabulary development, academic listening skills development, development of effective note-taking, and academic discussions and presentation skills. Course materials include authentic academic lectures and texts. Activities include giving formal presentations, engaging in small group discussions, and reporting on basic research. Successful completion of this course indicates that students are college-ready.
CE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT - ESL 1020Length: YearAvailable for: 11 This course develops academic reading, writing, and research skills of advanced ESL students. Students are introduced to languages skills necessary for successful completion of introductory university content courses. Learner outcomes include academic vocabulary development, improvement in reading and comprehension of university textbook materials, and development of the academic essay and research paper writing skills. Students read and present material both verbally and in writing, write essays, and complete a research paper.
